When home automation is applied to hotels, schools, offices, business centres, shops or guesthouses it is called building automation. It shares many functions with a home system but has its own features: access control and monitoring for centralised control and maintenance are added, and energy savings become even more important.

The Spanish Building Code already requires that, in the passageways of many buildings, lighting is only on when needed, according to presence and daylight. And a building’s energy rating depends directly on its consumption. Building automation constantly monitors how much energy is needed and limits it without reducing comfort. Some common functions:

In the Grupo Marcos car dealerships, showroom and office lighting adjusts itself and climate is managed from the same KNX system, with remote access for maintenance. In one office building, 73 lighting circuits work with 22 presence detectors, IP access control and fault alerts.
