We often talk about KNX on our website. If you are not familiar with it, these three letters may not mean much, but this communication standard is to modern installations what TCP/IP is to the internet: it lets every device communicate on the network, whoever the manufacturer.
What exactly does KNX do?
KNX brings the data from every device in the home into a single system, removing the problems of having several independent systems that cannot talk to each other. In practice, it lets you:
One system for everything
With unified control, KNX strengthens the main goals of home automation: security (technical alarms, intrusion, socket disconnection, open-window monitoring), comfort, energy savings (outdoor lights only at night, room-by-room switch-off, water-leak prevention, consumption by zone) and remote control of the whole home.
Having systems from different manufacturers, for very different applications, communicate in a consistent way is an advantage for today’s installation and makes any future extension much easier.
Open and independent
KNX supports several communication media (bus cable, radio frequency, IP network) and does not depend on any particular software or hardware platform. It is backed by hundreds of manufacturers and certified as a European and international standard (EN 50090 and ISO/IEC 14543). Compatibility, integration and simplicity are its great strengths.
